anomalousarts

We have a range of touring structures that we take to events and festivals and we are always developing new structures to add to the collection. The Fish (top left) was our first structure and marks the beginning of anomalousarts. He’s great fun to play, with wooden pieces to knock together, a clacking mouth, chiming tail, and NEW for 2011 a tuned hand-made xylophone!

The Deafening Drums (top right) were our second creation. They are a wonderful collection of drums made from heavy duty cardboard tubes and rip-stop nylon. They make an incredible noise with a wide variety of tones, and the largest timpani's can be heard for some distance around an event! This piece is always a favourite at the events that we attend and sometimes steals the show. We also have a selection of large double-skinned drums that we hang from nearby trees and structures.

The Sounding Serpent (centre left) was our first metal structure. It has a body of stainless steel bowls to sound different notes, a junk-jangles tail, cymbal collar and a steel rake head dress. On warmer days we add water to the bowls to vary the tones. The serpent is a particular favourite with young children and is really easy to explore and enjoy from toddler height.

The Boom Buckets (centre right) are a sextet of single string basses made from traditional steel mop buckets. Designed to be played by a group, they have different length handles to create both mid and low bass notes, and each bucket bass can play a range of notes as the handle is pulled to tighten and loosen the string. A wonderful structure for hands-on learning about simple stringed instruments.

The Melodic Mushrooms (bottom left) provide a set of six steel bowl bells and five hand carved wood blocks. The steel bar stems are also playable and create lovely mellow notes to complement the crashing bells. This is a great piece for combining wood and metal sounds.

Our newest piece, the Tuneful Tubes, is a fully tuned instrument which plays the pentatonic Ake Bono scale from Japan. Made from PVC drainpipes, supported by a hand made wooden frame, and painted with an original abstract design, it looks and sounds amazing. It’s so easy to play you can even use your own flip-flops to hit the pipes. Although, of course, we’ll provide bats for those wearing more sensible footwear!
